Funding Application

Funding Proposal

For my proposal, I would like to work on making an album and releasing it to the public to the highest quality. My name is Jesse Mateus and my skills as an independent artist are piano playing, audience singing beat making and rapping. My aim is to create an album to not only give my fans something to enjoy but also to increase my fans too. for this to work I will need the funding for recording and mastering my work.
With my music, it would reach to people who understand hip hop and rap music. The reason I target theme for my audience is so that my audience know what I'm trying to say in a way that they know and enjoy. To go about getting the audiences is by promoting myself on social media through my friends and family and through artists that have a similar audience.

so far in my plan, I have finished 5 songs and working on 3 others and looking for someone that can master my tracks. For my album, I will first finish of the 3 songs I am working on then get a mastering expert to finish mixing and editing it. while that is happening I will book venues to promote my work by performing songs I've made in the past and 2 songs from the album so my audience gets a little taster of whats going to be in the album. My past experience was when I put on a gig at a venue performing some of my songs I made to get the audience I have today. I promoted myself on social media with help of my family and friends.

In regards to the funding, I have made an analysis on how much this plan would cost to complete. for the mastering, it would cost no more than £300 or less. for booking a venue for the gig would be £200 or more. The things that might effect my plan is if the mastering expert takes long to finish it or doesn't work on it at all. another problem is if I don't finish the tracks in time for them to get mastered. I am expecting to get the funding after I finish the songs for my album that why I don't worry about the cost for the venue and mastering expert.

while in the middle of making my plan, I will be keeping a journal of things that has gone well or thing that hasn't and had to be scraped or edited. At the end of my plan, I am hoping that it will be a success and help me to create more albums that help to bring even more audience and also help me to think of different ways I can go with my music.

My four studio demo

For this track, I used a sample for the main part of the beat and worked around it added things in. At the start of the track, I bounced the first 8 bars the used touch mode to record the low pass filter and the added a little bit of distortion to it to give it a gritty sound.

For this song, I wrote the chords and use a summing stack full of string giving the track a brighter sounding to it a bit. for the verse and chorus. I use two different drum pattern. for the verse. I used a for slower and less energetic drum pattern and as for the chorus, more energy in for it.

This track was an experiment with the ES2 synth and making 808 this does not have the "boomy-ness" 808's is meant to have but, it served as a great source of bass. the melody was inspired by a song called Rambo by Bryson Tiller. on most of the tracks in the beat, I used the sample delay so they will bounce back and forth from left to right. I used a lost of reverse tracks after bouncing tracks for the build ups.

Nothing much inspired me to make this beat it just came together and I was just throwing in ideas that might work together. There's a bounced track with low pass filter played with touch mode.

Ethnography on hip hop

This is an ethnography on hip hop and the seven parts that make up hip hop.

Sound:

In Hip Hop the sound that makes it up are drums(sampled), bass and lyrics. In hip-hop, some of the musical element are sampled from other songs. Mostly from jazz and/or funk songs. An example of this is Nas N.Y. State of mind and Kool and the gang N.T.

(start at 5:29)

In the Nas track, he uses the drum part of the Kool and the gang song where all the other instruments of the songs we' silent and the only thing playing were the drums. In the Kool & the gang song, the drums are for sure complex and rhythmical. the sounding of the drums  quite strong and hard which keeps it rhythmical.

visual:

With Hip Hop, some have a unique style to them or similar depending on the area the was brought up but most are street clothes.

Image result for j cole
Image result for j cole

most hip hop artists either where a hoodie something to cover their head like a cap(some) they also have chains around their with jeans and trainers. For Hip Hop artists this is their sense of  own personality. a way to pick them out from others and truly stand out to others.

Technology:

Equipment used in Hip Hop are mostly turntables which were used to sample parts of a song and loop that part mostly drums breaks. This shapes the sound by taking one element from one type of music and changing it to a totally different music used for the purpose of Hip Hop.

  Image result for turntable

Mediatic:

Hip Hop was mostly was heard live on the street by a DJ with his turntables. Now, it can be heard live events gigs some with a DJ still but some also just have a band with them while they perform. Hip Hop is mostly heard online recorded by the artists. Also, a website for Hip Hop only where all hip hop genre related is showed on there. this is the website called world star hip hop.

Temporal:

One Hip Hop isn't as long as a 1-hour symphony it's least the 3 to 6 minutes long. A whole album is 40 minutes long with lots os small 3-6 minutes long song. the reason for is the is would probably be too much listen to the same song for an hour.

Corporeal:

Hip Hop contagious to whoever sits and listens to it. Frist, the grove with start at your feet making tap them to the grove. after that, the beat kicks in and it makes its way to your head, next minute you're nodding your head to it. as the song goes on and you hear the lyrics of the chorus a few time you'll start singing along to it and even dance to it.

Discursive:

Hip Hop main topic is in society and how they have been treat by the society around their area. most artists talk about the things around them that need change. it can also be used as a political way of getting their point across making it a freedom of expression.

studio work

J cole 2014 Forest Hill Drive is his latest album he's released. It an album with no features from any artist hence making him the first to get platinum without a feature. In this album, he talks about his time growing up with his family, issues he had, and problems he solved. My favorite song on the album would be the outro note to self. Equally, I like all the song on this album but the reason for this is because of its a big change from how he usually makes his music in term of lyrics, With these, he doesn't rap at all which he is mainly known for. Instead, he sings all the ways through until the part he starts giving out shout outs. also with the chords, his voice goes well with it.
This album Born Sinner was a little later the other one which was released in 2013. This album was more of a self-reflection toward himself. He talked about how he feels, how he stills feels and what he could of then better. In this song, my favorite song would have to be Born Sinner, Reason for this his because of how he made the beat match the mood of the lyrics. He made it sound like a gospel church song with the choir for the chorus. He talks mostly about forgiveness and how being a born sinner means your not perfect.

j Cole live performance

This performance that  j cole did at new york city also interests me no matter how make I watch it. not only because of the song or the band behind play amazing chords while he rap but also because how he interacts with the audience and gets the to respond in a that make them feel as if the part of the performance as well. one way of him achieving this is him cut one famous part of the verse and letting the audience sing it instead. Another thing J Cole does is move around a lot and show  gestures while performing. This shows how confidence he was that night he was performing. All of these feature are very important when performing to me because I like getting people involved in whaI i do. I would love to some day embed that in my performance and to also show more confidence too.

Evaluation

FMP Evaluation

Critical analysis:

With my work I submitted, I am defiantly pleased with it but compared to professional artistic work with the music industry I need a lot of work to match up to those standers. I would say my work fit into the musical industry since I tried my best to study and apply features showed by one of my favourite artists J Cole. This is proven by the fact the in my song I dod the same thing J Cole does and added singing and rapping in my song. With my work, I think I struggled with coming up with the lyrics at the start that I had to ask others for help. If there was more time what I would do differently is come up with more lyrics for my song and maybe come up with more song to perform. In the future, I will manage my time so that I can get to do more on my work.

Research:

My key area of my research was looking at J Cole and how he's chords work well with on another and different way he structures his lyrics (verse, chorus, etc). My method towards researching this case study was analysing his techniques and he was a think when performing by watch and listening to how he perform and sing/rap and understanding why he does what he does. I also looked up on web pages the help me as an individual musician to enhance my skill is chords singing and writing lyrics. In my work, there is some element that I have researched and applied into my work. I feel that I've researched enough to understand and try to apply some of those techniques towards my work effectively. Topics I could of research if I had more time would be mixing and mastering effectively for a gig and maybe how to present myself on stage. In my research, I've learnt that jazz players use cluster chords and much complex chords to give the music a much more rich and in depth sounding in their music which take us to J Cole and how he use that to make his music stay interesting throughout.

Technical/Practical skills:

My research has informed me giving me a clear understanding on how I should structure my song how I should write it and different chords to make it interesting. A new skill I've gained from my research is the ability to write lyrics for a song and write interesting chords for my song. My skill from the start of the project to the end I think has grown quite a bit in terms of knowledge of different type of technique and then putting into practice that will later on in the future help me.

Project management/working methods:

A problem from the middle of the course was that I had writers block for my music and how I got passed that was seeking out help from my classmates to help me write or give me some ideas on what to write about. I would say I kinda completed my project goal. I planned on doing two covers and two originals but because of my time management, I could only do one original so I cut it short cause it was too much to balance out with all my other works. In my access time, that was provided to me, I would listen to Charle as he talks to my class about writing up our research posts and giving us different ways of improving our work. If I didn't have him I would spend my time focused on my music writing lyrics and editing it to make sure everywhere fit in perfectly within the music.

Collaboration:

To help me in my work I sought the help from two students from level 3 performance and they helped out a lot. their role was to help me come up with a theme for the song and write lyrics for it. the collaboration between us was very fun and enjoyable I was able to get so much done for my song if wasn't I don't think I would have had a song to perform. The problems however, I faced with them was that they one min they said the wanted to sing it with me next they said they did so in the end i decied to do my song on my own but i still thank them for there help towards the song and maybe in the future I will turn to them again.

Research

I have been researching jazz chords so i can try use them to make my song sound interesting and complex. most artistes use jazz chords mostly in hip hop so people like j cole uses it in his music which inspires me to try put that in my music.

This is a video of the different chords in jazz which includes cluster chords. They look very complex to learn but with practise I'm sure ill get the hang of it.What i've learnt from this video in that 7th chords progression are extended chords that are  used to give a fuller sounding and richer harmonic progression.

This is me attempting to play those chords and for my first time I picked it up quick.  How I used theses in my music was by playing it as chords for the main part of the song.

My successes and failure making my song

This is the song I will be performing at the gig called "you got me".

How I started to make was listening to a song called grass ain't greener by Chris brown and like the chords he used so I learnt the chords and used them and the main part of the song. the chords are

F*
Ab
Bbm
Ab
Db Sus2

I played the chords twice for the sustain which give it a more rhythmical complex sounding to it.

I use a pad to play these chords cause I really liked how it sounded with it but there was a problem when it was playing. It was making popping sounds and I had to get rid of it. How I want about getting rid of it was by using the EQ plug in.

These got rid of all that popping noise which gave it a much smoother sounding for the pads.

With lyrics I got help with a few of level 3 performance students at the start. Being influence by there lyrics I started writing my own lyrics based on the subject they wrote about which is about love towards a person. I failed on coming up with a significant chorus for the song but a came to an understanding that it really doesn't need it and instead came up with a repetition saying "my feelings" so it give it a sense of resonance. Also, I wanted to copy a technique from one of J Cole's song "Crooked Smile" where at the chorus Its repeated. While recording the lyrics onto logic I used Reverb and Echo on all of the audio tracks.
I use buses to send it straight to the track so the have the some level and some sounding Reverb/Echo. for my vocals (Excluding my rap verse) I used pitch correction cause it sounded good with my voice for the song.

performing my song to Olly he gave feedbacks on my vocals and how I should project them in the song. he said I should "support my top notes more" throughout the I've been coming up with ways to go about that and I've researched on singing techniques.

These are the song i was going to do but I didn't come around to cause I was to focused on one song so my time management was poor when it came to dividing my time spent on each songs.

These reference are about jazz chords and voicing on the piano. i wanted to look up on these cause J cole, one of my favourite artist, uses most of the time of jazz chords and voicing in his music. so being influenced by him I wanted to know how he goes about playing his chords and i came across these.
In these I've fount of that jazz players uses complex and rich progression chords to keep their music interesting. A device that jazz player sometimes uses are cluster chords to add tone diversity
within their music.

This shows me how cluster voicing works in jazz which I find interesting but I still don't understand like why people uses it.  Because most hip hop artist have cluster chords in their music and I want to include that in my music cause I loved how it sounded and the feeling it gave to thorough out the mix of the song.

Key Song Analysis

Power trip by J Cole.

Chords:

In this song the chords he uses for the chores are

Bb minor
Ab major
Gb major 7th

the verses has a sample from Hubert Law called no more of a flute that goes on through out the verses of the song. the key in Minor to give it a more subtle feeling to it.

Melody:

with the melody is mostly from the sampled flute accompanied by the vocals. the sampled flute is used for the chorus and cut out in the verse for the vocals.

Tempo/Rhythm:

For the tempo for this track is in the middle from fast and slow to give it that chilled vibe and it never changes. the rhythm of the song is mainly made by the drums and the percussion within the song. The rhythm is very bouncy and will definitely get your feet moving.

Mix:

The song was very well mixed from how all the instrumentals and EQ are balanced out from one another. The loudest in the song would have to go to the kick drum. reason for this to be the loudest in mix is to get you to move or bump your head to the song. I would describe the kick punchy and thick to get that "in your face feel"

Instrumentation:

This song has a lot of instrument play different chords different melodies differently. First, we got the strings playing the chords above accompanied with piano playing the same chords complementing on another. Next, we have the sampled flutes that provides the melody for the song which helps out with the backing vocals. finally, as said for the mix what keeps the rhythm is the drums. reason for using strings and the piano as the chords is cause it has a chilled vibe to it so you can appreciate all te effort he put into making the song and same could be said for the sampled flute.

Structure:

for the structure of the song, it starts off  as an intro which lasts for 2 bars with a different section from the song he sampled which then drop into the chorus with the main sampled flute he sampled. then the verse kicks in which last for 12 bars. then as followed the chorus etc. after the 3rd chorus he repeats it again with another 8 bars.

Lyrics:

The lyrics for this so has a real feeling of how it feels to be in love with someone. What J cole usually tries to do with his lyrics is to paint you a picture of a story he is rapping/singing about  and this song is no acceptation. He paints an image of a guy falling in loving how can't sleep can't eat keeps writing love song thinking about the one he love. His flow for this song is not at all aggressive but calm with fits for this song. the singers flow (Miguel)  is smooth which fit perfectly for the chorus. J cole and producer Elite came up the lyrics for the song. there also 2 or 3 offensive words in it to also sure the love can be frustrating as well.

Friday 6 May 2016

my project presentation

The feedback I got from my classmate was that I should first and for most get a band to preform and fast. they also said when making my original song i should keep it simple and when preforming take the drums out and let a drummer drum on it.

With these feedback i'm taking in to heart and doing every I can do to at least came close to reach those goal. How I will reach these goals is to do a 4 week schedule of rehearsing since the L3 performance have band workshop from the beginning of the term. This will help to balance out my original songs and covers and also time to edit things that needed editing.

case study

In this case study i'm going to look at j cole and how his chords and lyrics work with each other and with that i'm hoping to achieve in my music. The area I need to work on it the use of complex chords and J Cole is a great example of the and a good example of is work is not to self.

with the chords in this song their very simple and repetition. the reason for that is to give the lyrics and the other instrument in the song more room in the song. With his lyrics it like he's telling a story. He sings about his childhood with his mother and how much he loves her and in the chorus he talks about himself and how he all see things positive. In the rap part there no specific subject he talks about. In this song, he raps and sings the chorus and verses . how he goes about doing is that he sing the first verse and the chorus and then switches the verse to rapping then switches it back. With his vocals in this song, they are the melody of the song which work well with the bass and piano.

this song by j Cole has really complex chords and I've been trying to work out them out
working out the chords for this song I've come to a conclusion that the chords contain for the verses

B Major
E Minor
C Major
and  G Minor.

The lyrics in this song talk about love and the feeling you get over it. he talk about no matter who no matter where no matter how you will feel it. Thought out the song he sings the song instead of rapping. Then he dose an outro. The vocals follows with the chords both in the verse and the chorus.

With researching J cole's song I tried to copy some of his ideas like lyric, song structure, chords and how he wrote his lyrics that fit with the beat of the song. How would try copy these feature J Cole presented is to follow the same why he made his song and sings/rap the same type of genre he sings/raps about. for the chords, I will learn them and then play them in different ways.

Here an example of one of my work.

So Far Presentation

What is my Project?

My project is to come up with four song two original two cover at least if 1 of each

Why I chose to do this?

Reason for this choice is because I don't just want to produce in the music industry. I want to preform also.

How I'm Going to go about doing this.

I will need to find a band to help with the song,

My Research.

In my research I've been looking at J Cole and how is lyric and chords work well together.

Reason?

with this song apparently I fount out that with the chords are very simple and repetitive which is a good idea to give more space for the vocals and the other instruments that in the song.

I've also been listening to hip hop song most of them have 808 and samples. I mostly don't use 808 but I've attempted not yet with samples.

In the next 4 weeks.

in the next 4 week I will decide what song to preform for the cover and start write lyrics for original I'm probably going to need Luke or Olly's help with that. I will also start gathering people I need in my song.

Contemporary Evaluation.

Overall Progress.

from term 2 I've learnt much  more then i did in term 1. I learnt how people now day make music and how the copy some of it from older artists and changed it in to there own style. I also find my skills to have improve in term 2.

I seem to still struggle in coming up with lyrics for a song and I also struggle on some of the lesson i learnt in theory classes.

I am happy with what i created but i'm also not cause I know i could of done beater

Technical skills.

I'v develop my skill on coming up with different chore progression to put in my music.

In logic i fount a slow down feature that make it sound like when DJ's are scratching on there decks. i love using it in music for when the beat is about the drop and get all heavy it give it a sense of atmosphere.

My skill in logic is improve a lot since the beginning of the year and i'm confident in my ability in logic. Where I probably need help on is EQing my sound so it get a well rounded mix.

In my theory lesson I have some more knowledge as i had in the beginning of the year but i still need to learn a lot more. I tend to struggle when knowing what each Italian word means in music.

Time managing,

In term one my problem was that i had so many idea the i kept changing my work to many time. What i did differently in term 2 was plan what i was gonna do and stuck by it.

My work was done all on time without any set backs.

I spent my time mostly trying to come up with lyrics for the music with it so i didn't have time to mix it or edit it.

I used the access room to help me give me more time to come up on the lyrics.

I'm not to happy with my music i submitted cause i feel if i finished it it would of been better.

Research.

Last term i didn't really research much on artistes back then and how the made their music. This term I look up on all type of hip hop artistes from the old ones to the new ones. I needed to research on how artistes now days come up with ideas for the music and how they go about making them.

Most of the research I look up on help me when making my music. for example i  looked up on how J Cole make his music and uses samples. I try doing that (the method on sample was hard) and it really was amazing. In the future when making my music i could use a lot more sampled things and put it in my music.

Group work.

The class playlist i think was better then the last playlist we sent out. reason i think that is cause we had more freedom to do what we wanted to do. I think it was a success just like the last playlist we put out.I think we reached are audience since we still followed our servery's we had before.
In the future we could have more the one song for each of use in the playlist. I think the perfect way to present our music would be the same way we are doing it.

class mates songs

with this song I like the vibe it gives off . I love the instrumentation works well with all the h harmonics. I like the way he put this song song together and how it fits so well with the lyrics. I like the instrumentation he put in this song. I like the way he changed up te song from being all chilled to being up beat and something to bump to

Task A and B context work

Contemporary artists

The two artistes I'm going to compare is J Cole and Skrillex the equipment they use and how they use it in there music.

J Cole use a lot of sampling in his music but he uses it differently from most artistes. He use it in a way where it easy to come up with ideas for a song. for example most of his sampled drum sample and that give him ideas to come up with new instrumentation for the song. another example would be when he was making power trip he took a flute sample and gain idea from just that loop

J Cole also use logic for sampling and uses a midi controller too. how he dose is by taking a sample off somewhere edit it of you want it to sound put the sample in the EXS24 and you can be able to play your sample from the midi controller.

Skrillex  uses totally different Equipment due to the different type of artistes they are. as a DJ he use turntables and tractor to make and present his music.he also uses a a finger trigger midi controller as well.

With my work I've used logic and a midi controller. I have followed the foot step of j cole and used samples in my music. I also used machine drum pad while making one of my music which was a great experience for me.

For my DJing I'm using tractor to present my music i makle on logic and music from other artistes I'v chosen to present.

finding faults

In this song at around 8:50 the mistake that wasn't fix was a sound that sound like someone was play some sort of instrument while recording.

This could of been prevented buy cutting that part out and recording it again from we're it got interrupted by the noise. or they could compress the audio so that sound wouldn't appear.

My Proposal

Introduction

What I would like to do for my project is to make a couple songs and perform some of them. I also want to work with other people on my songs and do one cover at least. I would like to use backing tracks as well as a live band to perform my song and cover. I also want to learn and embed different chords in my music so it sounds interesting and complex to those who will be listening to my song

Context

As a composer, my work sounds a lot like game beats. what I would like to make hip-hop beat instead with samples and the type of music that making people remember my lyrics while bumping their hand or making some kind of gesture. For this to happen I need to look up on using plug-ins and how to use the sampler on logic x and also how to make my music loud but at the same time not clipping.

As a songwriter, I find it hard to write verses and come up with chords so I need to work on that. I also find it hard to come up with ideas on what to write about which always gets to me when writing lyrics which I would need some help on that by my classmate or teachers.

Researches

I would be researching artist that write hip hop songs. this will help come up with idea on both my song writing and composing skills. I'm gonna also research old hip hop artist and how they make the song and come up with ideas from them I can put into my work. artist, I would look up on will be: Nas, J Cole, Kendrick Lamer and other people like them. I also research lyrics and chords hip hop artists use which contains: jazz voicing, cluster chords, etc. How I plan on using these is for the chords of my song that will hold up the whole song. Weekly I'll be sat on a computer learning and practicing these chords until they became second nature to me and hopefully be able to use them in my music.

\

This video is J Cole preforming crooked smile and this is a way I would like to preform my music with a live band also. I chose this video cause I was heavily inspired on how J Cole performs with his band. This is also my ideal way i would like to try and preform and for that to happen I need to gain much more confidence on stage to include it in my performance.

Timeline.

In 3-5 weeks I will be working on writing the music for my song and editing it. I'll also get a band to preform 2 covers and practice with them. In 6-8 weeks I will finish with my song and be writing lyrics for it and finishing my practicing the covers and both covers and originals to ready to preform.

my work songwriting

For both of my work i could only come wih lyrics for the course since writing lyrics is not my strongest part in songwriteing. i repeated the same words in both of the song to have the same style as j coles song crooked smile. in terms of intrumation most of the chorsed i used are use alot in a lot of artistes since 2010 till now which is where i got the ideas from.

playlist plan my plan

For this project it gotta be a better then the decade project we previously did. What I think the best way to present our playlist is to put it online so everyone can download it on to there devices. I also think it would be a good idea to present it live to an audience so it gives us a much wider audience and there would share it online.I believe the best way of reaching a bigger audience is to get one of us that knows a lot of people on social media to share it online telling them to also share it. our art work cant have the college's music logo we need to come up with other art works something that with catch peoples eyes. something with lots of colour and meaning about us. My research is big artistes that have release albums. Most of them have art work that is relative to the albums name or was they are talking about. As for the our audience My research is based on how we got our audience to listen to our decade playlist.

playlist plan/class meeting

My class and I came together and gave our ideas and thought on our last playlist.

Week 1
We had a few really good ideas the we can do to get more people listen to our music and some ideas the might not work(cats). what we came up was the we could do a lyrical intro and Outro.

Week 2
today we talked about what our art work is going be on, how are we going to present it and on what social media is it going to be put on. he picked sound-cloud and YouTube

Week 3
in our meeting we had a vote on what art work we are going have on our playlist, if we show have a logo on the picture in our playlist and if we should/shouldn't have a text as a group or individual. we also talked about when we should larch the playlist and we came up with emailing the students to listen and share the playlist

Our decade project playlist analysis.

Me and my class made and put up a playlist of one of our decade song on SoundCloud where they can listen to it for free and also download is onto there computers.

I think the way we presented it was successful since we did what our audience surveyed when we asked them how they listen to music

this proves my point on how i think it was a successful method due to the amount of plays each had.

Even tho I think it was a success I still think that it can be improved.
My thought to improve the way we present the playlist is to still upload it on SoundCloud but some who are willing can also preform it in a gig in college or at a college event meaning we have to survey the students in college what type of music do they like to hear.

looping is it an art?

Looping

Looping in music is where you record your self preforming an instrument (for example guitar) and overdubbing  a preexisting loop you've recorded. people all over the world who have ever done it or seen it live have discussed and debated on if good thing for music or if its not music at all.

Pros on Looping

the good thing about looping as some people have said it useful for doing two thing at the same time without needing an extra pair of hands.it also handle for when artistes want to write lyrics for a song so they would loop it on one particular part.

Con on Looping

some say that looping is not music art since it only repeats the some thing record and no instrument is used.

My thought are that loops are classed a music is help out when your making or writing music so therefore it should be noticed as an art of music. using it or not is completely up to the artist but it would look nice always using it in your music all the time or on stage.

My skill progression

                                       My skill progress

At the start of the the first year I started the course with not much knowledge in my of the classes. I was on a basic level but now I feel as if I've learnt so music in my lesson

Music Theory

At the start of the course I didn't know much about how to read music, key signature or how to play the piano effectively in the correct manner. The only skill I had at the start was playing the piano and how to play scales and chords. Now I know about major chords, minor chords, and perfect intervals.

Composing

when I was in my composing lesson I fount it a bit hard since I had to listen to the key artistes given to me to listen and and try to copy the was they compose there work. knowing how they made there work I fount easy cause I mostly listen to thing and pick it up by ear. But there to put in on logic was a challenge since most of them when they was making there music they made it in a complex way to copy.

Logic

At the start of the course I knew a lot about logic and how it works but all the complex thing about it I had no clue about it. For example, at the start I learnt how to edit audio in a destructive and a non destructive way. for me I fount that hard because of all the process it go into it.

DJing

At the start I didn't know anything about DJing it was all new to me. now I know how to use the cue and cross fade on tractor. I learnt for to time my song effectively while switching songs.

Studio Techniques

before my classes with grant i didn't have a clue how the studio is meant to be used now I've learnt a lot about how the studio is meant to be treated and how everything works in a studio.

Recording vocals

With record vocals at the start of the course I had some knowledge of how to do it more effectively . for example I now know for to use plug in's to bring that in your "face type" of sound.

Hardware

With the equipment in the studio I wouldn't know the different name and type of mics used in the studio. i also know what all the equipment is setup and how to use them in the studio.

Instrumental

At the start of the course I knew how to play piano and i feel as this course has enhance my piano playing. the Instrument i would like to learn to play in the guitar and bass guitar so when I make my music I can bring some live element into my work

Music Business

In my context lesson I've learnt how some music was use through out the years. I've also learnt how royalty's work and the risk of sampling without anyone say its OK

Attendances&punctuation

at the start of the course my attendance was at 100% but is was still great attendance including my work.

Organisation

My work was always organised so that I can reach the deadline with every piece of work i was set to do. from the start and now.

Motivation

At the start i had the same motive for music and to learn new was of making presenting my work.

Independent working

At the start I could work just fine on own and then talk about what i did in my work in front of the class.

Group work

At the start of the course i could share my ideas in the group and also talk about what we came up with in or work.

Decade Evaluation 2

The decade project was a little bit challenging for me in terms of analysing and describing the technique use but artists in the 90s.

Overall

When I first started the decade project I didn't know a thing about Erykah Badu or the Beatles and the way they present there work. before the decade project I never thought that most of hip hop was inspired by Erykah Badu or that  Stevie wonder's simple chords is used in almost ever song today.
from the decade project I learned different ways of making music and also how big artistes back then made they music. I've also learnt in the project about key signatures, time signatures and how to read music more effectively in my theory classes. In most other my mistakes, mostly in my theory classes, I learn from them by doing the opposite from them and continue from there. In my work I mostly still struggle with learning the theory work. for example, I have trouble knowing about key signature and how they work. I'm happy with a few of my work and the rest I don't. reason for this is cause of time and lack of inspiration from the artistes shown.

Technical Skills

In the decade project I learnt a lot of skills in my both theory and my chosen classes. I've learnt different way of presenting my work and different way to make my music. For example I've learnt how to read music on a score sheet more effectively. My skill I'm more proud of is my logic skill when I was doing my remix and song writing classes. The way my logic skill has develop over the course is by knowing all the techniques and different thing to use to enhance my musics. My composition skills has probably increased the most. My increase of knowledge with all the theory technique and how it all works in music.

Time management/working method

The problem I had last half term was having left time to finish off my works. This time round what I'm doing different is trying to finish my work in one classes them the next classes I'll work on something else or edit it a bit. I completed all my work on time but some was more finish then others. On the course I usually spend more time on one work then the rest for it to sound close to perfect. I didn't really use access time the much for my work i usual just finish it in class. With most of my work I am happy with but I could of then better with them all.

Research

My research method is still the same as last terms only different is that I in this term I know most of the music and we have the freedom to choose how to research about. In the half term I didn't really listen to the artistes given to which is the reason why I kind of struggled with my work a bit. most of my work was influence by some of the key artistes and some from some of the artistes from today. From them I've learnt that most of today hip hop was inspired by  Erykah Badu and that most of the chords used up today was inspired by Stevie wonders.

Group work

I think that putting our decade project was successful. Our target of audience was the people who listen to music of Soundcloud for free and downloadable so I strongly think we reached our audience. I the future we could also preform our songs in a gig as well not on online. My perfect idea of a present my songs to my class is straight from logic so u can describe what you did.

context easy resubmisson

Political and Social part of hip hop.

hip hop was a form of expression organised by African-Americans community's in the 1970s in new York city.

Back in the day black people had no freedom to do anything they was treated as worthless people with no expectations. in 1965-1979 most of the black people couldn't take how they was look at by society anymore and started to standing against them. there was a lot of riots, freedom speeches cause by people like Malcolm X, Martian Luther King, black panther and many others. earlier then different part of America's young black youths was ruled by gangs and drags. But in New York City Other use positive ways instead to express them self like DJ's, rapper and break dancers. Instead of forcing on gangs killing one other and drugs, these people prostrated love and peace towards others thorough there music, there dancing moves, and there art too.

How hip hop has changed over the years.

Technology wasn't as advance as the things we got today. back then hip hop was just a DJ use a viral and loop section of a drum beat from another song and someone would: rap over it or dance with it. now days hip hop is made and prostrated in many ways. today people uses a lot of sample a cut outed part of a another song and play in on a key bored then loop it make a song out of it. back then you would of had to buy a sampling equipment to do that job. now it done in the same place. Logic pro.
In hip hop the lyrics was a message to other to love one another and bring peace and war. Today its about money, sex and drugs.

In my opinion old school hip hop was beat even tho there wasn't and of the equipment as we have today but that brought people together. It was something to share and have fun with other. the lyrics had meaning back then it wasn't always about money, sex and drugs. it was mostly about how they feel. if there angry they won't go kill someone they would of shown other by dancing. if the hurt or sad they wouldn't  lock them self planning to kill them self. they would eases his pain by writing it down and letting others here whats on his mind. back then it was about expressing and bounding with each other in good times and in bad.

Have they inspired me.

In terms of  expressing them self inspired me a lot. They have inspired me but not directly. They've inspired rapper after there time like my favorite rapper J Cole. he was heavily inspired by people like; 2Pac, Biggy and Nas, somewhere along the line they was all inspired by someone carry on they way of expressing them self's.

sequencing demo

My plan for this terms sequencing class is to make 4 or 5 hip hop tracks using samples like j cole. I am also gonna try to sing/rap on them and get someone to also jump on it too.

performance essay

Thought out every performance DJ and live artist they have shown and taught me different skills and technique.

The DJ i'm gonna talk is Skrillex. Skrillex is a producer and the songs he makes are dub-step and chooses to present his music at a concert or online. The equipment he uses are apple Mac Book Pro,
Native Instruments Traktor Software, Pioneer DJM-800 Mixer/MIDI Controller
and 4 CDJs and a Traktor Audio 2 DJ Interface. He use these equipment to make his songs and preform them at concerts. With Skrillex  he doesn't have a MC the mic when he preforms his songs like Andy C but he is very wild when he is preforming and the audience  go wild with him too. for example in one of his performance he stoop on the the table where is equipment was.

The artist i'm gonna talk about is J Cole. J Cole is a producer and is a hip hop songwriter. He choose to present his song also online and in concerts.but unlike Skrillex he use different equipment to make his music. The equipment he uses are Apple MacBook Pro, M Audio BX8 D2 Speakers, Yamaha NS-10M Studio Monitor, Neumann TLM 103 Condenser Microphone, headphones and logic x pro. when he is making music he uses alot of sampling mostly from parts of a song and turn it in to a melody. J Cole isn't as wild as Skrillex but he dose know the crowd go wild when he preform. when he on stage he more calm and engages with the audience more by cutting the song out and making them fill in the blank

These two artist both have one skill I want. And that's the confidence  to engage with the audience whiter it be DJing or sing or rap on stage.

like Skrillex when I DJ I rather not have a MC on the mic to hype up my music ill let my music do that

when i'm preforming my songs and I've rapped or sang on them i want to include the audience in the song so just like J Cole did ill cut out a part of the song and make them fill it out

My DJ review

With my DJ skills I need to time my song so there ain't no silent space in between the songs. I also need to have more song to avoid from playing the same one again. I need to learn to use the cross fade more better then how I used it when I was DJing. I used the low pass filter well if I keep practising in can master it same with all the rest.

professional gig JME and Skepta

I want to see JME and Skepta preform shutdown Skepta hit single at the O2 academy in Brixton.
the area was large with one main stage where the both preformed at with the crowd in the middle of area. when they both preformed the audience jumped and sang along the them each time to song cut so they can fill in the lyrics for them to interact with them. the lighting in the gig was so it get the audience hyped and goes with the song. Skepta and JME preformed wildly moving around the stage interacting with the audience and not once was they scared or shy to preform, in fact the opposite. they had a DJ to play the song and cut it for the audience and also had the songs music video at the back on a screen.

Christmas gig

The Christmas gig full of joy and laughter as the level 2 and level 3 music preformed there song in the big rehearsal room.

First up was the level 2 and there first song was last Christmas. It stated with piano which was play amazingly. then came the vocals for the song which got the audience impressed making them scream and clap on what they just heard. the lights was in a mellow color to go with the song and give the feeling to the audience too.

Next song they preformed was hallelujah. a rocky start at the end but they came thought and the end. the instruments was only drums and vocals. not much to say by they sang well together. the lighting was set up the same way as last Christmas too.

I don't know if this was there last or third song but it was called don't want trouble and it was an original and was one of of my favorite song preformed by them. the light went wild while with the drums. the instrumentality was set great the bass and keys fitted right in with the lyrics and the drum.

moving onto level 3 Oscar comes on the stage giving a hand clap and introducing them and getting ready for them to preform.

most song i don't remember but i remember i feel good. a song with to drummer in it looked a bit weird but at the end they both had a drum out and it was amazing to see that for the first time got the crowd screaming. the vocals was great too a long side the piano and the lights was crazy with the drummers flashing everywhere.

tear drop was repeated twice but with different people but both was great i think it was the same drummer on the pads with different sample of the song. the light was in a not so wild set up but was calm which fitted with the song nicely

on and on was soo great it was sang amazingly again the drummer was great. the song in the middle go changed with an original track made by Oscar which was amazing didn't see that coming at all.

in conclusion with the level two there was not serious in one of the song they called it off mid way and was stopping for no reason  but with the level 3 there was so confident and ready
